Teaching with Ellin Keene

We had the most amazing experience in Room 43! We had the opportunity to be taught reading by Ellin Keene. As a teacher, she is an idol for me in the reading world. I got to sit next to a celebrity! Some of her include books:
 Talk About Understanding

 Assessing Comprehension Strategies

We learned about figurative language but in a deep way. She defined figurative language "as the way the author puts words together to cause the reader to stop and pause," and maybe even have their breathe taken away. She called this having an aesthetic experience

After her thinking aloud and modeling her thinking, the students were sent out to experience their own aesthetic moment.
What language did the author use that took your breath away?

While students worked independently, I had the opportunity to listen in on her conferring and then even do a little co-conferring! She is a true genius when it comes to reading and pushing students thinking beyond the text.

I am so grateful to be in a district that puts an emphasis (and money) into developing their teachers. Being able to have this experience is something so many teachers could never dream of, and I have had the opportunity to work with Ellin Keene many times, in addition to Matt Glover and Debbie Miller!
